Moose:
The island of
Newfoundland boasts the highest densities of moose in the
entire world! The largest member of the deer family, as
well as the largest elk, the moose is by far the most popular
big-game animal in Newfoundland. These animals were
introduced to the province at the turn of the twentieth
century and provincial population now exceeds 125,000 strong!
This large ungulate stands taller than a large saddle horse
and often weighs in excess of 1500 pounds. |
|
Caribou:
High populations of woodland caribou forage the boreal forest
and roam the high plateaus of our remarkable island. The
only place in the world to hunt this magnificent animal is on
the island of Newfoundland! The woodland caribou is
indigenous to Newfoundland and differs from the "Barrens
Caribou" sporting exquisite antlers of slightly less
mass, but more points than its relative, which makes for
a beautiful trophy mount. |

A
560 pound black bear.
Scored in the Boone & Crocket record book. |
Black
Bear: The black bear of Newfoundland is the world's
largest, frequently weighing in at over 500lb! A
combination of genetics, range and very low hunting pressure
and an abundance of food contribute to making the Newfoundland
black bear larger than any of its cousins in North America.
High densities of bear are widespread all over the island of
Newfoundland. Baited stands are used to lure the
behemoth in spring, as they are quite hungry after a winter's
hibernation. In the fall, 'spot and stalk' hunts are
common, as the bear may be sighted feeding on berries while
ambling along barrens or wetlands. Provincial population
is currently stable at approximately 10,000 animals. |

Particulars:
Our hunting lodge is accessible by vehicle via a logging road.
There is a short walk from the parking area to the main lodge.
We are situated on the shore of a lake which stretches five
(5) miles, buffered by large stands of forested land.
Above the trees are barren plateaus (caribou terrain).
We have two satellite camps, each a comfortable three (3)
miles from the main lodge. Each of these camps are
located on pond shores. The distance between the main
lodge and these camps is made up of a series of small ponds
and open marshland (ideal moose habitat!) There are
points of trees left around cut-over areas to provide cover
for the animals. Moose love these areas because of the
incredible biomass of young deciduous trees and undergrowth.
We have miles and miles of wilderness terrain to hunt!!!
A fairly aggressive hunter should see approximately 25 moose
and 35 caribou during a normal week of hunting. For the
average hunter, 30% to 40% of animals taken are classified as
trophies. This percentage can rise if the hunter is
willing to work a little harder.
Newfound
Outfitting offers fully guided single or combination hunts for
moose or woodland caribou in the months of September and
October. We also offer both bow and rifle hunts, with
the bow hunt, preceding the rifle hunt by two weeks. All
hunting packages are for a six (6) day duration.
Trophies may be prepared and shipped to your home through the
expertise of a local taxidermist. |
