Geography & Geology

Flora & Fauna

Newfoundland Bull Moose
Moose enjoy the rich foliage of the Serpentine River Valley.

From the wetlands and waterways of the Serpentine River system to the rugged outcrops of the Blow-Me-Down mountains and Lewis Hills, the plants and animals found are as varied as the ecosystems in which they live.

From moose in the wetlands to highland flowers, the environment will hold you in awe.

While the lowlands of the Serpentine River are full of vegetation, the stark hills rise in contrast with the green lushness below. The perodite rock means practically no vegetation grows in the highlands, but the native plants and animals are both spectacular to see and a joy to discover.

The Newfoundland & Labrador provincial flower - the Pitcher Plant - a unique carniverous plant species, is found in abundance throughout the area.

Simms Gorge (Unique Newfoundland Geology)

This valley is a prime example of division between two distinct geological formations: between the mantle rock and ancient ocean crust.
